Strawbale construction is a specialised, environmentally friendly construction system, using condensed bales of straw covered with plaster, in place of standard cladding techniques.
Contemporary Strawbale construction originated in the US in the 1890?s, and was invented as a result of a timber shortage. The technique saw resurgence during the 1970?s and continues to grow in popularity throughout the US.
The concept is relatively new in New Zealand with only a few examples of the technique in the country. However, Mike May, proprietor of Palstering.co.nz and one of N.Z?s few experienced consultants, believes the technique is perfectly suited to the New Zealand market.
